Entry # 5 - The First Days of School

A picture for Hewlett.org that represents diversity.

As suggested from the nursery Christian song entitled "Jesus Loves the Little Children" and I quote, "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, red, brown, yellow, black, and white, they are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world". It is given that we have diverse students. They may be big or small, smart or slow, it can be also be factored by religion, background, home environment, mind set, we always have a variety of students.

As innocent as it seems, this song reminded me on how can a simple nursery rhyme can change the perspective and view of someones mind. You may be wondering why I chose the song to start my blog. Well, Wong's The Effective Teacher part two which is The First Days of School tackled about setting the environment, mood, and atmosphere of the classroom from the very beginning of the academic year up to the last second. Talking less of the intricacies of the second part of the DVD, there is only one point that struck me. The point that is engraved in my mind is consistency. Consistency in a sense that you, as a teacher, should always have your students back. You should be a man of your word. You should always be prepared. You should always give the best for your students, may it be a simple lecture or a very meticulous course rundown, Consistency is key for classroom management. You can always reprimand and punish your students whenever they make mistakes, but that will just be repetitive and will not help in their growth as students and actual human beings.

Dr. Wong not only helped me to become a better teacher but also helped me to become a better man. It always comes down on how you carry yourself as a teacher, on how you want to be presented in front of your students. It is in your hands whether they will learn or not. You have the greatest responsibility. It will always transpire inside the classroom, the consistency that you injected every single day while you are with your diverse and special students.
